On Scene in a Heartbeat': Officials Credit Thorough Planning for Thwarted Synagogue Attack
"At least one individual came to the temple. Security saw him, engaged him in gunfire at the scene. The suspect drove a vehicle through the doors before exchanging gunfire with security. Something ignited inside the vehicle, and the suspect was found dead inside. Everybody's been moved out of the school."
"Actually, Chief and I have been communicating for almost two weeks, every time I've gotten some intelligence from the national level, I've been sharing. We've been talking for two weeks about the potential, sadly, of this happening. So there was no lack of preparation."
"The FBI's Detroit bureau led an active shooter training for the temple in January so they would be prepared for such an attack. All Jewish facilities in the area are going to have a lot of extra presence around it until we figure this out."
Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, experienced an attack on Thursday when a suspect drove a vehicle through the synagogue doors and engaged in gunfire with security personnel. A security guard shot the suspect, who was found dead inside the vehicle after something ignited within it. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard credited the temple's security response and advance preparation for preventing casualties. The temple had conducted active shooter training with the FBI in January. One security team member was injured by the vehicle but treated at a hospital with no other injuries reported. Local authorities had been coordinating for two weeks following intelligence about potential threats. Additional security measures are being implemented at Jewish facilities throughout the region.
