Photos: Scientists trace a butterfly migration route that is millions of years old
Briefly

An international team, the Worldwide Painted Lady Migration Project, has traced the migration of painted lady butterflies for the first time, identifying 10 generations during their journey from Africa to Europe and back. Photographer Lucas Foglia documented this trek between 2021 and 2024 through his project 'Constant Bloom', highlighting how the butterflies adapt to changing climates. Despite experiencing significant shifts in weather and habitat, these butterflies adjust their migratory routes to follow the blooming flowers, showcasing their resilience and survival skills in a warming world.
From the perspective of these butterflies, which live only five weeks in their adult life, the world is always blooming.
As weather patterns have shifted due to global temperatures rising, when and where flowers bloom has also shifted, but the butterflies seem to just change their routes accordingly.
