Plans to redevelop Alewife's MBTA garage fall apart
""The MBTA maximizes every dollar to build a more connected, equitable, and reliable public transit system,""
""We remain interested in models like joint development and recognize its value, as it offers innovative ways to support the communities we serve.""
""While this changes the immediate development landscape, it does not change the City's commitment and priorities for the area.""
The MBTA stopped seeking a developer to overhaul the aging five-story Alewife parking garage because a weakened real estate market and rising early labor and construction material costs made the project financially unviable. The decision delays planned redevelopment amid new housing and expectations for more commercial and biotech investment in the Alewife area under the 2019 Alewife District Plan. The MBTA says it remains interested in joint development models and committed to working with Cambridge to improve the station. The garage is undergoing repairs, and a 2020 MassDOT analysis estimated at least $55 million needed over ten years to keep it open. A 2023 car crash damaged the ceiling and caused at least $1 million in damage.
