Police officer dismissed for pretending to work from home
"Evidence found during the majority of shifts Sgt X worked in April and May 2025, her keystrokes were between three and eight times higher than colleagues in a similar role. Sgt X gave an account of her actions and admitted using a corner of a picture frame to weigh down the keys so her laptop would not go into sleep mode."
An Avon and Somerset police officer, identified as Sergeant X, was dismissed without notice following a gross misconduct hearing for fraudulently appearing to work while working from home. The Professional Standards Department discovered unusually high keystroke activity in 2024, prompting an investigation. Analysis of her work in April and May 2025 revealed her keystrokes were three to eight times higher than colleagues in similar roles. During the investigation, Sergeant X admitted to using a picture frame corner to hold down laptop keys, preventing the device from entering sleep mode while she was not actively working. She was barred from police and other law enforcement agencies.
