Porn advertisers target California secretary of state's website
"(Kelvin Kuo/Los Angeles Times) The California secretary of state's website appears to have been compromised with advertisements for pornography and cash apps. The breach is part of a nationwide cyberattack pattern; a researcher has tracked at least 38 government agencies across 18 states targeted by similar attacks in recent weeks. The researcher warns bad actors could exploit the vulnerabilities to access citizen information or impersonate government agencies in fraudulent communications, raising urgent questions about government cybersecurity."
"Google users searching for information related to the sites, both of which are overseen by the California secretary of state, were directed to PDFs with links and titles that include "My friends hot mom" and "Japanese Sex Video Porn Videos sexy." Those links, which appear connected to the state government website, were interspersed with legitimate web address for the business services and other information provided by the secretary of state. The links, once opened, direct users to porn sites."
California's official elections and business registration websites were compromised with pornographic and cash-app advertisements. Google search results pointed to PDFs containing links with titles such as "My friends hot mom" and "Japanese Sex Video Porn Videos sexy," and those links directed users to porn sites. The compromised links were interspersed with legitimate business services addresses on the secretary of state's site. Multiple government websites nationwide showed similar intrusions. A researcher tracked at least 38 government agencies across 18 states targeted in recent weeks. Security weaknesses could allow attackers to access citizen data or impersonate agencies for fraud, and some incidents involved third-party hosting vendors.
