Record numbers of Americans set to travel for the holidays
"Something like 122.4 million people nationwide will be boarding airplanes and zipping or perhaps plodding along freeways and roadways. That number of travelers going at least 50 miles in the period from Saturday until Jan. 1 would be a 2.2 percent increase over 2024, when a record 119.7 million people traveled nationwide. AAA expects 89% of this year's travelers to be on the roads."
"Locally, the peak air travel days already began at San Francisco International Airport on Thursday and will run through Monday, spokesperson Doug Yakel said. Airport officials anticipate that some 165,000 to 170,000 arriving and departing passengers will move through SFO on each of those days. We recommend allowing extra time during those days, Yakel said, adding that the only other day that will top 160,000 passengers between now and New Year's Day will be Dec. 26."
An estimated 122.4 million people nationwide will travel at least 50 miles between Saturday and Jan. 1, representing a 2.2 percent increase over 2024's 119.7 million. AAA forecasts 89% of travelers will use roads. California expects 16.6 million travelers to venture at least 50 miles, with about 14.5 million traveling by car or other vehicle. AAA projects 8.03 million domestic air travelers nationally, a 2.3 percent increase and the first year-end period with at least 8 million domestic flyers. San Francisco International Airport expects 165,000–170,000 passengers on peak days and recommends allowing extra time.
