Arrested in South Korea in June 2024 and extradited to the United States in November, Ptitsyn served on the administration team that provided malware and infrastructure to affiliates. He participated in the scheme since at least November 2020, facilitating the sale, distribution, and operation of ransomware. The Phobos operation, active since 2019, targeted over 1,000 organizations globally and generated more than $16 million in ransom payments. Sentencing is scheduled for July 15, with Ptitsyn facing up to 20 years imprisonment. US and European authorities have conducted multiple takedowns and arrests targeting the operation.
