The U.S. Department of Education announced a significant cessation of grants to Harvard, led by Secretary Linda McMahon. This decision intensifies the ongoing conflict between Harvard and the current administration. McMahon accused the university of disregarding federal law, especially post-Supreme Court rulings against race-based admissions. The letter was filled with accusations about various scandals and failures at Harvard, portraying it as neglectful of its ethical and legal responsibilities. This situation highlights a broader tension between higher education institutions and governmental oversight in the context of academic standards and legal compliance.
The United States government will no longer award grants to Harvard, Secretary of Education Linda McMahon announced in a letter to University President Alan M. Garber '76 on Monday.
McMahon accused Harvard of flouting the Supreme Court's 2023 decision overturning its use of race-based affirmative action in admissions.
In every way, Harvard has failed to abide by its legal obligations, its ethical and fiduciary duties, its transparency responsibilities, and any semblance of academic rigor.
That we have a Secretary of Education whose only experience in education is teaching pre-adolescent boys to jump on each other's head, is for the moment unsolvable problems.
