South Shore mother and son stuck in Qatar amid war in Iran
"It just feels so much like we've been abandoned. You get put in circles with automated messages. They say leave a number and they send you a text back saying 'leave the country.' Where are we to go? If our own government is telling us to leave here, let us know how. How do we leave?"
"They have reported to us that they've been hearing missile launches and perhaps drone explosions, things like that, which is deeply unsettling. Schuhwerk and her son are sitting tight right now. They seem to be comfortable but very, very apprehensive."
"Reaching out to friends and family for assistance in stepping up pressure on the US government to provide help to get stranded Americans out of the Middle East. Even just guidance on how to leave would be a help."
Following U.S.-Israeli military attacks on Iran last Saturday, thousands of travelers became stranded across the Middle East with severely disrupted air travel. Several Massachusetts residents, including Hingham native Stacey Schuhwerk and her son, took shelter in Qatar after their vacation was interrupted. Schuhwerk reported receiving inadequate support from the U.S. State Department and embassy in Doha, describing frustrating automated responses and unclear guidance on evacuation procedures. She publicly appealed for assistance through social media to pressure the government for help. U.S. Representative Stephen Lynch confirmed his office has been working with multiple constituents stuck in the region, including residents from Hingham and Hull, though some have since evacuated through alternative routes.
