Texas is considering a significant reversal on hemp product legality, with a bill passed by the state Senate aiming to ban nearly all consumables with THC. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick labels these products a public health crisis, stating they pose risks, particularly to youth. Critics of the ban argue that better regulation is needed instead of an outright prohibition. The proposed legislation moves forward as concerns about safety and youth access rise, amid Texas's strict cannabis laws. A new ban could disrupt a burgeoning industry established since the legalization of hemp in 2018.
"This is a poison in our public and we, as the Legislature, our number one responsibility is life and death issues," said Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who's leading the effort to ban consumable hemp products.
Democratic state Sen. Jose Menendez of San Antonio was one of those who voted no, siding for sales that are more regulated. "Do it like we do liquor stores... only people who are consenting adults can use this," Menendez said.
