All five miners trapped in the El Teniente mine in Chile were found dead after a collapse caused by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake. The lead prosecutor confirmed the last body was identified after rescue teams drilled through extensive rock. The earthquake instantly killed another miner and injured nine workers. Investigations are underway to determine if the earthquake was natural or related to mining activities, alongside potential safety violations. Operations in the affected section were halted, and 3,000 individuals were evacuated for safety.
"We deeply regret this outcome" said Aquiles Cubillos, the lead prosecutor. The five miners were trapped deep inside Chile's El Teniente mine after a section collapsed.
Rescue teams located the trapped miners by using GPS, but they could not communicate with them due to the collapse.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the earthquake that led to the incident and whether any safety standards were violated.
Codelco halted operations in the affected section and evacuated 3,000 people to safe areas.
