Mexico has filed a complaint with Washington over alleged non-reciprocity in extradition matters. Since October 2024, the Sheinbaum administration has transferred 92 individuals of interest to the United States, mostly drug traffickers, using a legal approach that bypasses formal extradition procedures. The Mexican government says the United States has refused to extradite 269 alleged criminals requested by Mexico since 2018. Mexico notes that some transfers have still occurred, including the 2022 extradition of Cesar Duarte and the 2025 handover of Miguel Angel Berraza Villa. The dispute centers on U.S. requests tied to alleged links to trafficking networks and Mexico’s refusal to process a request involving a sitting governor due to insufficient evidence presented against him.
