Breweries across the country are reassessing their family-friendly status due to incidents involving unsupervised children causing safety hazards. Forest City Brewery in Cleveland banned children under 16 after staff encounters with young kids. Incidents include children climbing trees and running around unsupervised, forcing staff to act as babysitters. Icarus Brewing in New Jersey followed suit, instituting 21-and-older hours after a child escaped into a parking lot. Brewery owners express concerns that parents have become overly relaxed with supervision in these typically family-oriented spaces.
"We had staff trying to serve tables and almost running over 2-year-olds," he said. "We had kids climbing trees. There were many times I would walk out into the beer garden and see a kid in a tree, and instead of a parent telling them to come down, they're taking a picture. It was extremely dangerous."
"All I could think was: We didn't build Guantánamo, we built a beer garden," he said. "And if your child crawled under a ranch-style fence and into the brewery's parking lot, that defeats the entire purpose of having a family-friendly environment."
