TikTok agreed to settle a landmark social media addiction lawsuit hours before jury selection in Los Angeles Superior Court, and terms were not disclosed. The case names Meta, Snap, and YouTube alongside TikTok and accuses the companies of deliberately designing platforms to addict and harm children to boost profits. The plaintiff, a 19-year-old identified as KGM, says she became addicted at a young age and experienced worsened depression and suicidal thoughts. Snap settled last week for an undisclosed sum. The suit alleges companies borrowed behavioral and neurobiological techniques from slot machines and the cigarette industry to maximise youth engagement and advertising revenue. Mark Zuckerberg is expected to testify during the trial.
