Rumeysa Ozturk, a doctoral student at Tufts University, was released from a Louisiana immigration detention center after over six weeks of confinement. Her detention followed her co-authored op-ed that criticized Tufts for not addressing protests regarding the Palestinian genocide. A judge ruled her release with no travel restrictions, deeming her not a flight risk. Ozturk's lawyers argue her detention was punitive for exercising her First Amendment rights. Despite the challenges, she expressed gratitude and plans to fight her case in court.
In the last 45 days, I lost both my freedom and also my education during a crucial time for my doctoral studies, but I am so grateful for all the support, kindness and care.
I have faith in the American system of justice and will continue my case in court after being illegally detained for speaking out.
