Waffle House has discontinued its 50 cent per egg surcharge as egg prices begin to normalize after a significant spike caused by an avian flu outbreak. Retail egg prices remain over 40% higher than last year, but wholesale prices have improved. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins noted that families are experiencing relief, contributing to overall food price deflation. Other chains also implemented surcharges during the egg shortage, and Waffle House's action reflects broader trends in food pricing, where overall food prices increased by 2.9% in the past year.
"Egg-cellent news," the chain announced Tuesday in a social media post. "The egg surcharge is officially off the menu. Thanks for understanding."
The spike in egg prices was a challenge for Waffle House, which serves about 272 million eggs in a typical year.
Families are seeing relief with egg prices driving food deflation, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said in a statement.
Overall, food prices are up 2.9% over the twelve months ending in May while restaurant prices are up 3.8%.
