Team USA defeated Sweden 2-1 in overtime to reach the Olympic semifinals and secure a medal opportunity for the first time since 2010. Quinn Hughes scored the sudden-death goal 3:27 into 3-on-3 overtime, beating Sweden goaltender Jacob Markström. Connor Hellebuyck saved 28 of 29 shots and was pivotal in keeping the Americans alive. Sweden forward Mika Zibanejad tied the game with a one-timer 91 seconds before the end of regulation. The Americans had opened the Milan schedule with high-scoring wins but relied on defense and goaltending in this tight quarterfinal. Dylan Larkin redirected a shot to give the U.S. a 1-0 second-period lead.
