The Bureau of Labor Statistics December report showed unusually slow payroll growth, with only about 50,000 jobs added and unemployment edging from 4.5% to 4.4%. December’s job gain was the weakest December of the past decade aside from 2020, and no December since 2015 (except 2020) recorded fewer than 125,000 new jobs.
