The One Big Beautiful Bill Act introduces a senior deduction of $6,000 for single seniors and $12,000 for married couples over 65, allowing an estimated 300,000 Mainers aged 65 and older to pay no federal tax on Social Security income. This reform is expected to benefit 88% of seniors, significantly reducing financial burdens. Starting in the 2026 tax year, eligible seniors can receive total deductions of up to $23,750 for individuals and $46,700 for married couples. Maine has the highest percentage of senior residents, providing substantial financial relief to its older population.
"This amounts to the largest tax break in history for America's seniors," the White House noted, citing the reform as a critical tool for helping retirees retain more of their income.
According to the White House, 88% of seniors will now owe no federal tax on their Social Security income, compared to 64% under the old law.
With the 2026 tax year as the effective start date, eligible seniors will now see total deductions of up to $23,750 for individuals and $46,700 for married couples filing jointly.
Maine has one of the highest percentages of senior residents in the country. Just over 320,000 of the state's 1.39 million residents are aged 65 and older.
