"Kemp declined to comment, and spokesperson Carter Chapman referred WIRED to a statement he made in early April after the legislature ended without a new system in place, where the office stated that they were working on it. A Georgia bill set a July 1, 2026 deadline to end QR code use but did not specify what system should replace it. In March 2025, an executive order required the Election Assistance Commission to approve rules banning vote counting via QR codes in most cases nationwide. Georgia legislators have not implemented a replacement system, leaving county election directors unsure how to proceed with the midterms. Cherokee County’s election director said there is no answer for how ballots will be counted. State officials declined to comment on fixes, while the secretary of state’s office proposed a temporary workaround using QR codes on election night for instant results.
