Using LGBTQ+ identities as punchlines has resurged and contributes to increased cruelty in public discourse. Jennifer Welch, a liberal podcaster and reality TV personality, launched a homophobic tirade against JD Vance, labeling him a "failed drag queen" and mocking perceived queer affectations. Welch also framed Vance's association with Peter Thiel and venture capital as evidence of queer performance. There is no evidence that Vance is gay or aspired to be a drag performer, and a college Halloween photo does not determine sexual orientation. Drag is an art form and should not be treated as a joke.
