Amid ICE clashes, New Hampshire bishop urges clergy to prepare their wills
"I've asked them to get their affairs in order to make sure they have their wills written, because it may be that now is no longer the time for statements, but for us with our bodies to stand between the powers of this world and the most vulnerable."
"I was actually quite surprised to open up my phone and find my social media blowing up with my own bishop on it."
"People feel like he's giving voice to a feeling in the pit of their stomach about what is going on."
A vigil in Concord, N.H. for Renee Macklin Good followed her fatal shooting by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. Bishop Rob Hirschfeld condemned the cruelty, injustice and horror unleashed in Minneapolis and warned clergy to prepare for a new era of martyrdom, urging them to get their wills and affairs in order and to stand bodily between powers and the most vulnerable. His remarks went viral. Reverend Jason Wells described surprise at the reaction and relief that the bishop gave voice to mounting anxiety among faith leaders who face pepper rounds, rough treatment and arrests while protesting ICE. Reverend Betsy Hess urged clergy to stop being merely polite and to take action.
