Brazil's leader Lula condemns Gaza genocide' at BRICS
Briefly

BRICS leaders met in Rio de Janeiro amidst tensions over Israel's actions in Gaza and its bombing of Iran. Brazilian President Lula criticized Israel's military campaign as a genocide against civilians, highlighting the death toll. He reaffirmed that while Hamas's October attacks were indefensible, Israel's retaliatory measures have resulted in significant civilian casualties in Gaza. Lula proposed that BRICS emerges as a defender of multilateralism, drawing parallels with the Non-Aligned Movement and asserting the importance of reforming Western institutions amidst global fragmentation.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated, "We cannot remain indifferent to the genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza, the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians and the use of hunger as a weapon of war."
Lula emphasized that nothing could justify Hamas's actions which resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly Israeli civilians, while criticizing Israel for the high death toll in Gaza, stating that at least 57,418 people were killed, primarily civilians.
During the BRICS meeting, Lula expressed that BRICS represents a continuation of the Non-Aligned Movement, claiming, "With multilateralism under attack, our autonomy is in check once again."
As BRICS leaders gathered, there was a call for reform in traditional Western institutions, with the group positioning itself as a supporter of multilateral diplomacy amid a fractured global landscape.
