Local officials, labor leaders, and community advocates rallied in Flatbush on August 27 calling for a two-year extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants. The event at Hillel Plaza was led by Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso just weeks before TPS for Haitians is set to expire on September 2, 2025. A June administration decision sought to end TPS, but a federal court temporarily blocked that move and extended deportation protection until February 2, 2026 while the Department of Homeland Security prepares an appeal. Leaders highlighted Haiti's escalating gang violence, famine, and mass displacement and pledged legal and social services for families.
"United with Haiti"
"Today, Brooklyn is coming together to show that when you come for one of us, you come for all of us,"
"Removal of TPS is something that just should not and cannot happen."
"Haitians cannot afford to go back to Haiti now,"
