Congress passed a law requiring the Department of Justice to release all Jeffrey Epstein files, with a December 19 deadline. Epstein died by suicide in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019, according to authorities. Under then-Attorney General Pam Bondi, DOJ released files in piecemeal fashion after the deadline and redacted more than survivors’ names. Bipartisan senators called for a probe after additional redactions. In February 2025, Bondi claimed Epstein’s client list was on her desk, which DOJ later denied. In May 2025, reports said Bondi told President Donald Trump his name appeared in the files. Trump denies wrongdoing and knowledge of Epstein’s illegal activities. Bondi, fired by Trump in April, met with the House Oversight Committee and said she delegated file release to then-Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, now acting AG. After the meeting, Bondi disputed claims she blamed Blanche. On CNN, Maxwell associate Ghislaine Maxwell’s potential pardon was raised during questioning of Rep. Maxwell Frost.
