Democratic House candidate Kat Abughazaleh indicted over ICE confrontation
"a political prosecution and a gross attempt at silencing dissent"
"nonviolent"
"As I and others exercised our First Amendment rights, ICE has hit, dragged, thrown, shot with pepper balls, and teargassed hundreds of protesters, myself included,"
"The Trump administration wants you to be afraid of speaking out against it and its anti-democratic power grabs."
A 26-year-old progressive frontrunner to succeed Rep. Jan Schakowsky was indicted along with five others for allegedly blocking and damaging an ICE vehicle during an anti-ICE protest in suburban Chicago. The indictment alleges the defendants banged aggressively on the vehicle’s windows, hood, and body, pushed against the vehicle to hinder movement, scratched the vehicle, etched the word "PIG" into it, and broke a mirror and a windshield wiper. Each defendant faces one count of conspiracy to impede or injure a federal officer and one count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding a federal officer, carrying maximum sentences of six and eight years respectively. A viral video shows the progressive being thrown to the ground by an ICE officer after standing in front of the vehicle. The charges were characterized as "a political prosecution and a gross attempt at silencing dissent," the protest was characterized as "nonviolent," and there were calls for the charges to be dropped amid broader complaints about ICE crowd-control tactics.
