Florida officials have reportedly redirected critical disaster preparedness resources to construct a migrant detention facility known as Alligator Alcatraz. Approximately $20 million in contracts, primarily benefiting companies linked to political allies of Governor Ron DeSantis, were allocated for this project. The facility's establishment has raised concerns, especially with hurricane season approaching, leading to criticism from Florida Democrats regarding the irresponsibility of these resource allocations. Furthermore, a 15-year-old boy was allegedly detained at the facility, contradicting claims that it only houses adults. DeSantis has stated that funding will be recouped from FEMA.
Officials in Florida diverted crucial disaster preparedness and response resources to support the hasty construction of the so-called Alligator Alcatraz migrant detention jail by the Republican governor, Ron DeSantis.
Most of the $20m in contracts analyzed by Talking Points Memo went to donors or political allies of DeSantis. Much of the money was allocated for construction services, communications equipment, and security enhancements.
DeSantis's alleged raid on resources intended for disaster response has prompted fury from Florida Democrats, who say creating a deficit as hurricane season approaches is the height of irresponsibility.
DeSantis has said the jail was set up with $450m in taxpayers' money he expects to be refunded by FEMA, despite the controversy surrounding its operation.
