A federal district court judge ruled against the Trump administration's request to vacate a previous injunction that stopped nearly half of the Office for Civil Rights staff layoffs at the Department of Education. The case centered on the unique harms alleged by the Victim Rights Law Center regarding discrimination protections for students. Judge Myong Joun's decision noted that the Supreme Court's ruling in a related case did not negate the specific injunction applicable to OCR layoffs, emphasizing the distinct circumstances of each case.
Although this case and New York are related, I issued a separate Preliminary Injunction Order to address the unique harms that Plaintiffs alleged arose from their reliance on the OCR.
Although the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to continue with the reduction in force broadly, it does not mean the enjoinment of layoffs within OCR is no longer applicable.
