Michael Ben'Ary, an assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, was abruptly fired while prosecuting a suspect in the 2021 airport bombing in Afghanistan that killed 13 U.S. service members and 160 Afghan civilians. A note left on his office indicated a false social media post contributed to his termination. The termination followed a pro-Trump commentator's claim linking Ben'Ary to former Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco and alleging internal resistance related to a Comey indictment. Lindsey Halligan was installed as interim U.S. Attorney after the previous U.S. attorney left following political pressure.
