ED Clamps Down on Student Voting Work
Briefly

The Department of Education has released new guidance discouraging colleges from utilizing Federal Work-Study funds for student involvement in voter registration and other political activities. The acting assistant secretary stated that such jobs are considered political because they support the voting process. Education Secretary Linda McMahon emphasized using taxpayer dollars to prepare students for the workforce instead of funding political activism. Colleges are also cautioned about distributing voter registration forms only to eligible students, indicating a strict adherence to political neutrality in educational settings.
Jobs involving partisan or nonpartisan voter registration, voter assistance at a polling place or through a voter hotline, or serving as a poll worker—whether this takes place on or off campus—involve political activity because these activities support the process of voting which is a quintessential political activity whereby voters formally support partisan or nonpartisan political candidates by casting ballots.
Under the Trump Administration, taxpayer dollars will be used to prepare students for the workforce.
