Fearing Trump interference in midterms, NY Democrats push voting rights package
""What we're seeing at the federal level has raised a lot of concerns about potential impacts on voters, election administration and public trust in democracy," said state Sen. Kristin Gonzalez, chair of the Senate elections committee."
""ICE has a history of extrajudicial arrests. Many U.S. citizens have been swept up simply based on the color of their skin or the language they speak," said state Sen. Pete Harckham, who represents the lower Hudson Valley and sponsors the bill."
Democratic state lawmakers in New York are advancing legislation to strengthen voter protections and election administration amid federal proposals to nationalize midterm elections. The package would improve automatic voter registration, increase security for election workers and voters, and create a reliable funding source for county boards responsible for administering elections. A proposed prohibition would ban civil arrests without a judicial warrant at polling sites and for voters traveling to or from polling places, and would authorize the state Attorney General to sue federal immigration officials over attempted arrests in those settings. The reforms follow Democratic election law changes since 2019 and contrast with Republican moves to tighten voting rules.
