Republican senators Roger Marshall and Tommy Tuberville introduced the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act, allowing individuals to deduct up to $10,000 in overtime pay from taxes. Couples can deduct up to $20,000, with income phase-out provisions starting at $100,000 for individuals. Marshall emphasized the potential for significant savings, claiming that families could save up to $6,000 alongside extended tax cuts. The legislation, supported by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, aims to address tax burdens on overtime workers, especially in light of inflation concerns.
"This is one of President Trump's priorities, and it's one of my priorities as well," Marshall said at a press conference unveiling the legislation.
"Potentially, for a person that's working overtime, they could save another $4,000 on taxes if this legislation is signed into law by the president."
"They should not be punished with higher taxes for working longer hours," Tuberville said in a statement.
"Thanks to the leadership of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, we're advancing a common-sense measure that will provide real relief to hardworking Americans."
