""When I'm elected Governor, we'll keep the Massachusetts flag and our historic motto," Mike Kennealy wrote on X."
""ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem," meaning "by the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty.""
""I'm against creating a new state flag," he told his followers earlier this month."
Massachusetts created a Seal, Flag, and Motto Advisory Commission in 2024 with $100,000 in funding to recommend new public-submitted designs. The commission received more than 1,150 ideas and advanced dozens to a second round before announcing three finalists for the flag, seal, and motto on Aug. 28. The current flag features the state seal and the Latin motto. The seal depicts an Indigenous man beneath a disembodied arm holding a sword, and the motto reads "ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem," translated as "by the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty." Some advocates, particularly Indigenous people, have called for a change because of the imagery, while Republican candidates have publicly pledged to keep the existing emblems and polls of supporters show strong preference to retain the flag.
