Homicides Drop at Record Rate in Trump's First Year Back in Office
"Homicides in America decreased by 19.8% this year, according to crime analyst Jeff Asher. He wrote on Substack on Monday that his research is based primarily on the Real-Time Crime Index, which collects monthly crime data from 570 law enforcement agencies nationwide. Asher said 2025 will be the third straight year murders have dropped at a record pace, after there was a 15% decline in homicides in 2024."
"The drop in crime in 2025 is very real and very large, Asher wrote. He said looking at several major cities drives the point home: New Orleans is on pace for the fewest murders since 1970. New York City reported the fewest shootings ever recorded (though the start of recording is probably the 1990s). Numerous cities recorded the lowest murders through November since the 1960s, including Detroit (since 1964), Baltimore (1962), Philadelphia (1966), Oakland (1967), and San Francisco (likely since at least 1942)."
Real-Time Crime Index data collected from 570 law enforcement agencies indicate U.S. homicides declined 19.8% in 2025. The RTCI historically differs slightly from FBI figures, and the FBI's official crime report will be released in 2026, but current trends allow confident early estimates. Gun Violence Archive data show shootings down 17% year-over-year and fatal shootings down 13%. Several major cities recorded historic lows: New Orleans on pace for the fewest murders since 1970, New York City reported the fewest shootings ever recorded, and multiple cities saw their lowest murder counts since the 1960s. RTCI counted 5,912 murders January–October, versus 7,369 in 2024 and 8,520 in 2023. President Donald Trump frequently emphasizes law-and-order rhetoric.
