Tensions escalated after an ICE officer shot a man in the leg on January 14, an incident the Department of Homeland Security said involved the officer being attacked and fearing for his life. Shawn and Destiny Jackson accidentally drove into a protest area that evening and were blocked by agents while trying to turn around. Agents deployed crowd-control grenades and tear gas. A device rolled beneath their SUV causing a concussive blast, deploying airbags, flipping a toddler's car seat, and locking doors while tear gas filled the vehicle. The family, including a six-month-old who was hospitalized and children with severe asthma, were rescued after the parents and bystanders pulled them from the car.
