Irish woman living in US for 50 years faces deportation over 'bad' $25 cheque
"My wife is not a criminal,"
"You don't arrest 58-year-old grandmothers. It's just wrong. She hasn't committed crimes. You just don't do that."
"It's just not fair that you're telling me I have to be a bachelor the rest of my life because of some stupid policy,"
"refers generally to conduct that shocks the public conscience as being inherently base, vile or depraved, contrary to the rules of morality."
Donna Hughes-Brown, 58, was detained by immigration officials at O'Hare International Airport while returning from a funeral in Ireland. She has lived in the United States for 47 years after arriving at age 11 and holds Irish citizenship while remaining a lawful permanent resident. She works full-time in healthcare and is married to Jim Brown, a veteran. ICE is holding her at a county jail in Kentucky as the U.S. government seeks to deport her over a ten-year-old $25 bad cheque that she repaid and for which she received probation. The offense is being treated as a "crime of moral turpitude," and her husband has publicly appealed for her release, calling the detention unfair and egregious.
