On Wednesday (20 August), Vance was faced with shouts from protestors as he greeted National Guard troops at Union Station in Washington, DC. Vance, who was joined by defence secretary Pete Hegseth and White House Deputy Chief of staff Stephen Miller, met with troops at fast food chain Shake Shack and thanked them. "You guys bust your ass all day and we give you hamburgers - not a fair trade, but we're grateful for everything you do," he said, as reported by The Independent.
Vance said of the protestors, who he described as "crazy": "It's kind of bizarre that we have a bunch of old, primarily white people who are out there protesting the policies that keep people safe when they've never felt danger in their entire lives." He also claimed that Union Station had been taken over by "drug addicts," "vagrants," and the "chronically homeless." One heckler went viral on X after shouting that Vance was a "couch f****r," adding, "You gonna go f**k a couch, buddy?"
