A U.S. district judge ordered Kari Lake and two aides to testify under oath and to provide detailed information by Sept. 15 about plans concerning Voice of America and its federal parent, the U.S. Agency for Global Media. The judge warned Lake she was verging on contempt of court for failing to comply with repeated orders to disclose intentions for the federally funded international broadcaster. One aide named in the order is Frank Wuco. A Justice Department attorney was criticized in court for offering vague assurances rather than substantive responses. Multiple lawsuits were filed by Voice of America leadership, journalists, agency executives, unions, and press advocacy groups challenging efforts to alter the broadcaster.
verging on contempt of court
"Time and again, we've seen district court judges overstep their authority," Lake told NPR. "It's wrong, but sadly, it's become the norm. The current case against USAGM is a great example of why we need to restore constitutional checks and balances."
"That's just a hide-the-ball answer," Lamberth tersely told Michael Velchik, a senior counsel for the U.S. Justice Department who made his first court appearance in the case Monday.
