"Transgenderism, homosexuality, fornication, and all sorts of sexual perversions are a form of hypocrisy"
"shame from the inside."
"That, um, I don't recall the precise wording, but that sounds, um familiar,"
"for the edification of the people that I was preaching to. As a judge sitting here today, my obligation is to apply the rule of law."
"My obligation is to try to understand you, 'cause this is a lifetime appointment. Do you believe that fornication... is a form of sexual perversion?"
Justin Olson, an Indiana attorney and inactive ordained Presbyterian elder, was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. Olson works with the Independent Council on Women's Sports (ICONS) to challenge trans-inclusive university and NCAA policies. Senators pressed Olson about a 2022 sermon and earlier speeches that characterized transgenderism, homosexuality, and fornication as sexual perversions linked to inner shame. Olson hesitated to recall precise wording, described the remarks as religious edification, and emphasized his duty to apply the rule of law as a judge. He defined fornication as sex outside marriage and declined to state personal beliefs on biblical gender roles.
