Michael McFaul praised Donald Trump's recent initiatives to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, calling the meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders a positive step. He highlighted the importance of swiftly revisiting ceasefire discussions, arguing that such initiatives do not hinder negotiations. McFaul expressed concern over the lack of clarity from Trump's meeting with Vladimir Putin, specifically addressing the absence of detailed agreements. He advocated for stronger security guarantees, indicating a preference for NATO involvement in the peace process.
Whoever had the idea to bring all these European leaders together in addition to President Zelensky, that was a brilliant, brilliant idea.
There's no logic I want to underscore this idea that a ceasefire gets in the way of negotiations. That's not historically true.
I, myself, would like NATO guarantees rather than NATO-like guarantees.
And I'm glad that's back on the table.
