The R&A's new chief executive, Martin Darbon, reported positive discussions with Eric Trump about Turnberry's potential to host the Open Championship again. Key infrastructure improvements have been identified as necessary for the event. The last Open at Turnberry attracted 120,000 spectators, while recent events saw a surge in demand, with 1.2 million ticket applications for this year's championship. Darbon emphasized the need for collaboration with local authorities to enhance transport and accommodation to meet current demands, marking a shift in approach from his predecessor.
We talked through some of the challenges that we have so we've got a good dialogue with them.
We've got some big logistical challenges there. You see the scale of their setup here and we've got some work to do on the road, rail and accommodation infrastructure.
There were 1.2 million applications for tickets for this week's event and the R&A was keen to service that demand where we can.
I think we've been extremely clear on our position in respect of Turnberry, Darbon said. We love the golf course.
