Shay Myers, general manager of Owyhee Produce in Idaho, relies on seasonal immigrant workers from Mexico. ICE raids and heightened enforcement have created fear among workers and reduced applications, including from legally authorized seasonal workers. Myers reports that hiring local Americans is not feasible due to rural location and unwillingness to perform difficult farm work. Mauricio Sol said legally present workers fear arrest despite compliance with immigration laws. A Department of Labor report warned that the near cessation of illegal inflow combined with a lack of legal workers disrupts production, raises costs, and threatens stability of domestic food supply and consumer prices.
