""The libertarian Cato Institute called the law 'an archaic, burdensome law that has been able to withstand scrutiny and persist for almost a century.' There is an asymmetry of motivations among those who benefit from the Jones Act's protections and the vastly greater number who bear its costs.""
""As long as the Iranians are a threat and raising fuel prices, the president would like to keep the waiver in place for as long as is necessary," said a Trump adviser."
On March 18, Trump issued a 60-day waiver to ease oil shipping in response to rising fuel prices linked to the Iran war. This waiver has allowed 40 tankers to transport oil between U.S. ports, increasing the fleet by 70% and reducing costs. Approximately 9 million barrels of American oil have been shipped using foreign-flagged vessels under this waiver. The impacts are particularly significant in Alaska, where imported jet fuel under the waiver matches half of the state's average monthly consumption.
