Seattle Just Elected a Zohran Mamdani of Its Own
"KING 5 is projecting Seattle's mayoral race for Katie Wilson. Following Wednesday's ballot drop, Wilson extended her lead over incumbent Bruce Harrell to 1,976 votes. Her lead is now greater than the number of ballots left to count. Wilson has gained ground in the last three ballots drops. When she took the lead, she was ahead by a thin margin of 91 votes."
"Wilson, who like New York's Zohran Mamdani is a self-described socialist, focused her campaign on affordabilityhighlighting her own struggles to afford life in Seattle. She supported a capital gains tax to raise revenue, a move opposed by Harrell, stronger protections for renters and improving public transit. [Political consultant Crystal] Fincher said that message resonated in a city where housing has become out-of-reach for many of its citizens. There's a disconnect between what younger people are going through in day to day life today, she said. I think there's a split in the Democratic Party about that, that we're feeling our way through."
Katie Wilson extended her lead over incumbent Bruce Harrell to 1,976 votes, exceeding the number of ballots left to count and securing victory. Wilson ran as an unapologetic progressive and self-described socialist, centering her campaign on affordability and her personal struggles to afford life in Seattle. She supported a capital gains tax to raise revenue, stronger protections for renters, and improvements to public transit. Wilson pledged faster creation of shelter space and criticized clearing encampments, and she adjusted earlier calls to cut police funding during the campaign. Seattle has not re-elected an incumbent mayor since 2005.
