Sen. Alex Padilla Says He Won't Run for CA Governor in 2026
"It is with a full heart and even more commitment than ever that I am choosing to not be running for governor of California next year," Padilla told reporters in the U.S. Capitol. "I choose to stay in this fight because the Constitution is worth fighting for."
"Californians have urged me to do everything I could to protect California and the American Dream from this vindictive president," Padilla said. "I've been truly honored and humbled by their encouragement, and I've taken it to heart."
Sen. Alex Padilla announced he will not run for governor of California next year, confirming the decision in the U.S. Capitol and through his staff. Padilla said he chooses to remain in the Senate to continue fighting for the Constitution. He was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2020 to fill the seat vacated by Vice President Kamala Harris and is the first Latino to represent California in the Senate. Padilla gained national attention after a viral video showed him being forced to the ground and detained at a press conference. The Democratic primary remains crowded with candidates including Katie Porter, Xavier Becerra, and Betty Yee.
