States sue Trump over more than $6bn in education funds
Briefly

Officials from California, New York, Kentucky, and 20 other states have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for freezing $6.8 billion in federally approved education funding. This freeze impacts various educational programs, including support for migrant workers' children and adult literacy initiatives. Although legally required to release funds by July 1, the federal Department of Education informed states late June about the halt, citing a change in administration. The freeze disproportionately affects Republican-led school districts, with many reliant on these funds for student support.
The freeze extended to funding used to support the education of migrant farm workers and their children, recruitment and training of teachers, English proficiency learning, academic enrichment, and after-school and summer programmes.
In Kentucky, $96 million in federal education funds are at risk. Our kids and our future depend on a strong education, and these funds are essential to making sure our kids succeed.
While the government was legally required to release the money to the states by July 1, the federal Department of Education notified states on June 30 that it would not be issuing grant awards under those programmes by that deadline.
Ninety-one of the 100 school districts that receive the most money per student from four frozen grant programmes are in Republican congressional districts.
