"I hope Tesla's board at least takes note of my proposal's intent and the investor interest in the concept,"
"They can exclude my proposal from the ballot on technical grounds, but the issue remains-political perceptions are still harming the Tesla brand, reducing sales, and stressing government relations. I hope the board will find a way to improve that."
"jeopardized by unnecessary forays into the endless friction of human politics. The Tesla brand, and its mission, should stay above that fray."
The SEC ruled that Tesla may exclude a shareholder proposal that would have required executives to remain politically neutral from its 2025 proxy materials, preventing a potentially contentious investor vote. The proposal, filed by long-time Tesla shareholder and climate advocate Jay Butera, would have barred leadership from making political statements, endorsements, or contributions for or against parties or candidates. Butera said he is disappointed and argued the measure would protect Tesla's mission of accelerating sustainability and keep the brand above partisan politics. He urged the board to consider investor interest and address political perceptions harming sales and government relations.
