"to make one thing crystal clear: Florida will never submit to foreign law, including sharia law, in any form, at any time, under any circumstance."
"It's appealing to the hatred of Muslims,"
"It's absolutely preposterous,"
"It's so absurd it's laughable - except it's infuriating."
Hillary Cassel introduced House Bill 119, titled the 'No Sharia Act,' to prohibit application of sharia law in Florida. The measure declares Florida will never submit to foreign law, including sharia, in any form. Half a dozen other Florida lawmakers co-sponsored the bill. The Council on American-Islamic Relations called the legislation "rooted in lies, fearmongering and political distraction," drawn from an "Islamophobic playbook," and "designed to stigmatize Muslims." Rabbi Mark Winer described the bill as appealing to hatred, preposterous, absurd, laughable and infuriating and noted his interfaith leadership roles. Cassel did not respond to questions and reposted supportive social media comments.
