Minnesota Governor Tim Walz remains skeptical that the Trump administration will keep promises to de-escalate immigration enforcement in the state. Weeks of protests and the deadly shootings of Renee Macklin Good and Alex Pretti preceded the exchange. Walz wants to find a way forward but sets a firm boundary around constitutional protections. Walz will not compromise on the First Amendment and will not allow federal officials to characterize peaceful expressions of grievance as anything other than constitutionally protected. Walz frames protection of peaceful protest as foundational to democracy.
