"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration into the US on the Mexican border has been praised by shadow home secretary Chris Philp, who has said that measures could work in the UK. In a major overhaul of the US immigration system, Mr Trump moved to block asylum seekers from entering the country and fortified the Mexican border, as well as expanding the semi-militarised Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to target undocumented migrants."
"We would come out of the ECHR, which will enable us to deport all illegal immigrants within a week of arrival and remove 150,000 people a year with no right to be here."
Chris Philp praises Donald Trump's immigration crackdown and suggests similar measures could work in the UK. Trump's overhaul blocked asylum seekers from entering, reinforced the Mexican border, and expanded ICE into a semi-militarised agency targeting undocumented migrants. The Conservative Party's Borders Plan proposes leaving the ECHR, banning asylum claims from new illegal entrants, and establishing a removals force modelled on ICE. The plan promises rapid deportations and large annual removals. The proposal mirrors US measures and raises concerns about heavy-handed tactics and human rights implications associated with militarised immigration enforcement.
